My best friend is collecting unemployment and just broke her hip while out of state. She is stuck in hospital there until after surgery and recovery enough to ship her home. She could not possibly take a new job right now, is unemployment going to give her a hard time?

It should. You must be willing and able to work. UI is not a disability program.
So long as she is eligible she should continue to apply for unemployment. She will be called in at some point to verify that she is continuing to look for work and generally you are to keep track of your efforts to find a position by listing companies you have applied to, what position you applied for and the result. In her case she should use this form to advise she interviewed and was offered a position but that she was in hospital because of a broken hip and the job couldn’t be held. She shouldn’t receive a hard time from them. I would still contact unemployment and let them know the situation so that they can advise what, if anything, she may be required to do differently since she obviously can’t interview presently.
Best of luck to her and I hope she gets well soon!
i doubt they will even find out
Unemployment insurance if for people who are willing and able to accept work. She does not meet those requirements right now and would not be eligible to receive unemployment.
When she completes her UI certification form she is required to specify that she is not eligible to accept work at this time. If she doesn’t do this she is commmitting unemployment insurance fraud and when she is caught she will be responsible for paying back the money and a fine. She will also be barred from collecting any new unemployment for a period of 5-10 years. This is a crime and there is also the potential for jail time.
This would be a criminal act and appear on her background check. She is better off, just being honest.
Why would she report that to unemployment?
maybe – you have to be willing and able to accept work – if she had to turn down a job because of teh injury, then she could lose her benefits – or if the UC office finds out she is not able to actually work right now, she could also lose benefits
what was she doing that she broker her hip?
She can only collect while she is looking for a job and employable.
She is not employable at the moment.
She needs to apply for temporary unemployment. She should get 8 weeks for a broken hip.
