I’ve never done unemployment before so I have no idea how it works. Can you file for unemployment if you quit a job or do you only qualify if you are laid off or fired?

There are many scenarios where you can quit and still get unemployment, let me give you a few examples.
You accept a job as a cashier but now the boss wants you to go unload trucks and you are 90 pound weakling and afraid you will hurt yourself.
Your job was working the day shift but now they switched you to nights and you need to be free nights to care for your sick mother
It has become impossible for you work at your current job because one of the people there has threatened you or is stalking you sexually
You get the idea, quitting does not automatically disqualify you from unemployment as long as your reason for quitting is valid and you promise to seek other employment.
There is often a hearing to examine your reason for quitting, but perhaps not. Maybe it will be only a phone call. Or, a representative from your former company may contest it and you will have to appear in person. But unless it is obvious your reason was invalid, you will get benefits
