Is a cover letter nescessary for a part time job?

Im in grade 11, looking for my first job. Do i really need to send a cover letter as well or just a resume? Does it really matter?
p.s- Im thinking of applying to sports stores as cashier or grocery stores.

It’s always a good idea to attach a cover letter, it’s impresses the employer and gives them an idea of your personality and why you want to work at thier company, in a cover letter you have the chance to let them know how interested you are (ass-kissing lol), and you can add stuff that is not on your resume.
Yes……how would your prospective employer know what job your applying for?……………
