Sadly we do not live a utopian society and as a result we all have to work to get by. In the UK we tend to work longer hours and have less holiday than our European counterparts and as a result our jobs tend to be, at least in terms of time, the largest parts of our lives. As a result it is extremely important that we choose jobs that we enjoy and jobs that keep us motivated and contribute to our levels of happiness.
That would be great I hear the cynics out there saying but fortunately it is also possible if you can make sure that your job search is focussed and relevant to your skills and more importantly your interests. So if you are just about to embark on a job search and are panicking about how to go about it then do not despair there is hope for everyone. With a little bit of effort you can find yourself well placed to grasp your dream job. There are a few simple tactics that can be employed to make your job search more successful.
Writing a winning CV
CVs are one of the most important documents that you will contribute to in your lifetime. Sadly they can also be one of the most tedious. For most of us singing our own praises is a tricky task. Shouting from the rooftops that you are wonderful and that everyone should want to employ you is not always easy. But this is exactly what you need to do through your CV. The CV is the document that you send in response to job listings. It is the document that hits the recruiter’s desk and it needs to say enough about you for them to want to invite you for interview.
Therefore it is very important that it is engaging and that it includes relevant information about your work experience, your skills and your qualifications. The best way to start off your CV if you don’t know where to start is to find an example CV that appeals to you on the internet and use it as a template. Then all you need to do is fill in all of your personal information and work on an exciting and entertaining personal statement. Once you have done this then there will be no recruiter in the world that is capable of turning you down for an interview.
Find a job and send your CV out
Getting your CV out to as many jobs as possible is essential. The best places to look for jobs are on the internet, in local papers and in the job shop. Make sure that you research as many different places as possible and make sure that you try not to be too discriminatory about the jobs that you apply for.
It is very difficult to have a good idea of what the job is really like until you actually go to the place of work and learn a little more about it. It may for example sound like the most boring office job in the world but you may eventually find out that the office atmosphere is really good and that the people that you work with are great – so be sure not to turn down any job postings that you think you may be interested.
After all jobs that are fun to spend time at are often worth much more than jobs you hate. And better still even if you hate the place that you visit on your interview it is still a great experience to improve your interview techniques.
