My husband is a fireman; but to get a job to stay in the area that we want to live in he is applying for a security guard position at a nuclear power plant; usually his objective is “To become a career firefighter” what should his objective be for this job when we don’t know the official title he’s applying for, we just know it’s security.

Well, if you’re applying for a position against a job ad, then I guess there’s no need to mention the objective in the resume. The company may ask you to specify a job code if applying on-line or on the envelope if applying through snail mail.
I guess your husband should, in his resume, focus on matching his previous competencies and accomplishments as a firefighter. He can explain in the cover letter how his achievements can be good fit for the position he is applying.

One of you should be able to contact the plant and inquire, even anonymously if you wish, as to the title of the open position. You can ask to speak with someone in HR, but sometimes even the person at the front desk will be able to answer your questions. A clear, detailed objective statement can provide a lot of focus for your husband’s resume. Check out this article on objective statements from Monster.com:
