I am applying for publishing jobs and a few of the jobs ask that I send a writing sample or two along with my resume and cover letter. What kind of writing samples do people typically send for this kind of thing? And what should the length be? I don’t want to ask the companies, but I do want to figure this out! Thanks for any help!

If you’ve had anything published, that’s a writing sample – anything from your college newspaper, for instance. The length doesn’t really matter; just the quality of your writing. They want to know how well you write, what your “voice” is like. If you haven’t published anything yet (although I’m guessing you have), now’s the time to find an outlet – a community newspaper, a nonprofit you believe in, for instance.
Re one of the other responses – this has nothing to do with the resume; it’s a whole separate element of the application process.
