Should the cover letter be the body of the email, or should it be attached like the resume? If it’s attached what should the body of the email look like?

I’m applying for a job that simply asks for a resume to be emailed, but I thought maybe it would be good to include a cover letter to detail why I’d like the job. Would that be too much?

I want an honest answer. Maybe from someone who gets resumes from potential candidates in HR. Are cover letters really that important to getting a call back from a potential employer?
I’ve sent at least 30 resumes and cover letters off in the past month with ZERO success. My problem is, is that they take WAY too long to write, and I just end up sounding like a kiss-a$$ by saying how great the company is, and how I would love to work there,…yada yada yada….
Monster has this thing…
I’m applying for a job as a museum interpreter. I want the job because I know people who started as museum interpreters and then got into what I want to get into — vintage and antique clothing, either as dealers, curators, or writers on the subject. Should I say that in my cover letter?

Ok the economy is down and I need a job. I would be happy to work 8 weeks as an intern before taking the job to show the employer I have the skills.
Where can I get the cover letter I am using critiqued?

I’m looking for jobs in childcare, and have a VERY detailed resume of education and experience. When I apply online, sometimes there’s no way to add a cover letter…will they pass over my resume without one?
