I’ve never done unemployment before so I have no idea how it works. Can you file for unemployment if you quit a job or do you only qualify if you are laid off or fired?

For instance let’s say you are granted 24 weeks of severance from your job, can you collect unemployment benefits or do you have to wait until the severance runs out to apply for unemployment.
