i want few sample cover letters and resume formats

When applying for a job, to, say, write articles or blogs for a web publication and they ask for “writing samples” along with your resume, what should I send them? Only samples that have been published? Can I send unpublished samples? If I do send a short story should I only send the first few paragraphs or the whole thing? A job I’d like to apply for is requesting a cover letter, resume, and a writing sample. However, it doesn’t specify on length or topic. What should I submit as a writing sample??

I am applying for publishing jobs and a few of the jobs ask that I send a writing sample or two along with my resume and cover letter. What kind of writing samples do people typically send for this kind of thing? And what should the length be? I don’t want to ask the companies, but I do want to figure this out! Thanks for any help!
